Herrick The marshal of Salem Paper Mr Hale is nearly 40, tight-skinned, eager-eyed intellectual. A young minister reputed to be an expert on witchcraft. Mr Hale is called in to Salem to examine Parriss daughter Betty. His intimate liking toward Proctor actually stuns we, as readers, that a third party could be so understanding and is able to try and console those in need. In this case, Hale actually proves to be a upright citizen who tries to save Proctor from the noose by advising him to succumb to a false crime. Elizabeth Proctor Elizabeth does not appear until the beginning of Act Two. She is referred to beforehand, notably in a scathing comment by Abigail. When we first hear her, though, she is singing lullabies to her children, giving us the impression of a homely woman. The atmosphere in the Proctor household tells us that she has had difficulty in coming to terms with her husbands brief adultery. She is accused by both Proctor and Abigail of being cold and she confirms this opinion of herself in the last act. But she is no fool and understands well Abigails intentions, well before Proctor himself does. Giless wife, Martha, is accused of witchcraft, and he himself is eventually held in con-tempt of court and pressed to death with large stones. As the start of the play, Corey is something of a comic character and Proctor deals with his argumentative tendency is a good-natured way. He unwittingly implicates his wife in witchcraft, and whilst protesting to the court refuses to name an informant, and so is arrested himself. The grim manner of his death being pressed by great weights to try to force an answer is poignantly revealed to Proctor in jail. The Putnams A bitter couple, who between them represent the worst aspects of Salem society such as jealously, small-mindedness and greed, it was Ann Putnam that sent her daughter to conjure spirits in the first place and Thomas Putnam sought to gain from the tragedy of others. Thomas Putnam A wealthy, influential citizen of Salem, Putnam holds a grudge against Francis Nurse for preventing Putnams brother-in-law from being elected to the office of minister. He uses the witch trials to increase his own wealth by accusing people of witchcraft and then buying up their land. Ann Putnam Thomas Putnams wife. Ann Putnam has given birth to eight children, but only Ruth Putnam survived. The other seven died before they were a day old, and Ann is con-vinced that they were murdered by supernatural means. Ruth Putnam The Putnams lone surviving child out of eight. Like Betty Parris, Ruth falls into a strange stupor after Reverend Parris catches her and the other girls dancing in the woods at night. Rebecca Nurse Francis nurses wife, the elderly and respected Rebecca is a wise, sensible, and upright woman, held in tremendous regard by most of the Salem community, and one of the voices of good sense in the play. Hale has already heard of her good reputation before meeting her. However, she falls victim to the hysteria when the Putnams accuse her of witchcraft and she refuses to confess. The conviction of Rebecca reveals how low the community at Salem has fallen. She goes to her death with dignity and acceptance Francis Nurse A wealthy, influential man in Salem. Nurse is well respected by most people in Salem, but is an enemy of Thomas Putnam and his wife. Mary Warren Mary is the Proctors servant. She is weak and easily influenced, so it is ominous that Proctors evidence rests on Marys confession. She can barely speak in the courtroom and its relatively simple for Abigail to turn her. This is devastating for Proctor as Mary then testifies against him. Tituba Reverend Parriss black slave from Barbados. Tituba agrees to perform voodoo at Abigails request Betty Parris Reverend Parriss ten-year-old daughter. Betty falls into a strange stupor after Parris catches her and the other girls dancing in the forest with Tituba. Her illness and that of Ruth Putnam fuel the first rumors of witchcraft. Martha Corey Giles Coreys third wife. Marthas reading habits lead to her arrest and conviction for witchcraft. Ezekiel Cheever A man from Salem who acts as clerk of the court during the witch trials. He is upright and determined to do his duty for justice. Judge Hathorne A judge who presides, along with Danforth, over the witch trials. Herrick The marshal of Salem. Mercy Lewis Servant to the Putnam household. She is a merciless girl who seems to delight in the girls activities. The threats Abigail uses on the other girls are unnecessary for Mercy. When Abigail eventually leaves town, Mercy goes with her.

The Development Of Tourism In Malaysia Tourism Essay Tourism is defined as the travel for recreational, leisure or business (Wikipedia).These people who travel are known as tourists, back in 1936 the League Of Nations (LON) defined Tourist as someone traveling abroad for at least twenty-four hours. However, the  United Nations rectified this definition in 1945, by adding a maximum stay of six months on the former definition. Tourism is one of the worlds largest industries and one of its fastest growing economic sectors. It has battalion of effects, both positive and negative, on peoples lives and on the environment. For the past few decades, tourism has been growing very fast and according to the forecasts its going to be even faster in Asia and the pacific being the main continents which are promising to be the most important tourism destination of the world by 2020 because of its cultural heritage meaning that Pacific- Asia is the birth place of all the religions. The question would be, what does the religion have to do with tourism? Well one of the main significants of tourism industry is to see and learn other peoples culture from different parts of the world, which therefore gives an extra credit to Pacific- Asia. Domestically cultural heritage stimulates national pride in ones history whilst internationally it stimulates respect and understanding of other cultures. Tourism is made up of different forms; these forms are classified by typical features of spending time in the destination. Domestic tourism- is the traveling of people within the country inbound tourism this is when non- resident traveling within the country outbound tourism involves residents visiting another country internal tourism basically a combination of inbound and outbound tourism national tourism involves the combination of domestic and outbound tourism Malaysia in brief Ever since independence in 1957, Malaysia has been a country of a progressive multi racial society. The political system is based on parliamentary constitutional monarchy with a Federal Government structure, comprising 14 states. The constitution and parliamentary system is almost similar to the British Westminster model, except the members of Local Governments are appointed by the ruling parties at Federal and State levels. The location of both Peninsular Malaysia, and Sabah and Sarawak (in Borneo) lies entirely in the equatorial zone. The climate is governed by the regime of the north-east and south-west monsoons which blow alternately during the course of the year. The average temperature throughout the year is 26 °C with diurnal temperature range is about 7 °C. Annual rainfall is about 2500 mm with high humidity (80%) due to the high temperature and rate of evaporation. In the year 2000 the population was around 22 million. Under the Malaysia constitution, travel and tourism are concurrent matters in which both the Federal and State Government have responsibilities. However under the Ministry there is an agency which is directly in charge of promoting tourism in Malaysia. The agency is known as the Malaysian Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB), which was formerly known as the Tourist Development Cooperation of Malaysia (TDC) which will be touched on later in this article. Tourism development in Malaysia Lying just north of the equator, with more than one thousand islands found there, not forgetting the marine parks and rainforests all filled with beautiful birds and wildlife. It is in this country again where people talk about golden beaches, ever green vegetation, mountains and unforgettable shopping malls. All these can only be found in Malaysia; in general this country is a fascinating place to be. According to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Malaysia, before 1970 tourism was just an idle, it was not regarded as an important economic activity. It all then started in the 70s when the old Tourism Department of 1959 was developed or redefined to Tourism Development Corporation (TDC). It was officially formed in 1972 under the Ministry of Trade Industry (MITI) and was given a responsibility of acting as an authority development but with very low precedence therefore tourism sector did not really develop in Malaysia comparing it with other countries like Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. It was during this same year when Malaysian Airlines was formed too, this took the countrys economy by surprise a combination of MA and TDC led to the world tourism map. However, in the 80s the industry started increasing rapidly because of certain changes that took place in Malaysia, the increase of personal income, leisure time, and improvement in international transportation system s and finally the greater public awareness of other parts of the world due to the improvement in communications. The above mentioned developments gave a clear view to the Malaysian government that Tourism can play a big role in its economy and social development so as a result; it decided to promise to accomplish a series of positive initiatives to stimulate the development of the tourism sector. These include the following: (a) The government established the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (which became the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism in 1990). This provided an institutional framework for the planning, coordination, and regulation of tourism and for the first time tourism was accounted for within the framework of recognized economic activities; (b) By virtue of the Tourism Industry Act of 1992 and the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board Act of 1992, the new Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism took over from TOC the function of formulation and implementation of policies, licensing and enforcement aspects of the tourism industry. TOC thereafter became known as the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board (or Tourism Malaysia for short), with a role concentrated on marketing and promotion; (c) The Investment Incentives Act was revised in 1986 to include the tourism sector, thereby giving additional stimulus to tourism investment, such as the Pioneer Status Investment Tax Allowance, Industrial Building Allowances, and tax exemption for large foreign group tours; (d)The Investment Incentives Act was revised in 1986 to include the tourism sector, thereby giving additional stimulus to tourism investment, such as the Pioneer Status Investment Tax Allowance, Industrial Building Allowances, and tax exemption for large foreign group tours; In 1990, the federal government set up a Ringgit Malaysia (RM) 120 million special fund for tourism to stimulate its development, including small and medium scale enterprise. In addition Tourism is the second foreign exchange earner in Malaysia after manufacturing so the government does its best to stimulate this. Moreover in 2006 Malaysia was voted one of the top five popular outbound destinations out of hundred countries. Malaysias reputation for tourism has been growing in the last years, travelers look for more beachfront resorts; they are turning to Malaysias beautiful coast. However thats not the only way tourism is growing. Malaysia has become a hot destination for medical tourists in South East Asia, tourists seeking for cheaper prices on medicals, treatments, and drugs. Moreover, countries like Malaysia are beginning to protect their cultural heritage in order to increase tourism to traditional festivals and celebrations. Tourism in Malaysia can be divided into different sub sections which perform various activities but under the umbrella of the same tourism. Tourism activities can be divided into : Education tourism: Malaysia school atmosphere is well known for its uniqueness and social interaction of different groups, as the number of institutions increase due to the help of foreign colleges and universities so did the foundation of the tourism industry. Curently over 50 000 foreign students are in Malaysia. In addition, this type of industry is not aiming to target students only but also their families for example when they come to visit their children then that means they will also get an opportunity to spend their holidays touring around Malaysia. Medical tourism : health tourism existed long before during the eighteenth century. This tourism is associated with the following, spas, places with health-giving mineral waters, treating diseases from gout to liver disorders and bronchitis. Doctors have highlighted the benefits of bathing in sea water, and sea bathing, even this has become a part of health tourism. In Malaysia it was firstly introduced in 1999, known as the Medical Health Sector. It has become popular for its safe and mostly affordable medicine which therefore has attracted so many people around the world. Tourism at the Festival: The calendar of Malaysia is made up of a number of festivals. Hari Raya Puasa is a Muslim feast to celebrate the ending of the holy month of Ramadan. The Festival of San Pedro occurs in mid summer on June 25th. This festival is a celebration of fishing and the great role fishing has place in Malaysian culture. The fishing boats are decorated in brilliant colors and then blessed and a prayer said for a better year of fishing in the year to come. In August and September, Malaysians celebrate the Chinese Mooncake Festival, commemorating the defeat of the Mongols in the fourteenth century. On the evening of the festival, celebrants pour out into the streets to watch a beautiful procession of colored lanterns. The other delight of the festival is the mooncake itself, a sweet round cake of nut paste, red beans, and egg yolk. The company of my product is Garnier. Garnier is a company that produces cosmetics and hair care products. It was founded in 1904.For more than 100 years; Garnier has been creating new and available cosmetics to cover multiple beauty needs. Garnier is the second largest brand in L’Oreal group. Garnier is in the fast moving consumer goods sector. Garnier produces hair care products, including the Fructis line, and most recently skin care products under the name, Nutritioniste, that are sold around the world. Garnier is also a mass market cosmetics brand. The company’s product lines are targeted for different skin types and cultures. Garnier has a line of extensive range of beauty products. The company has changed as it has become part of the L’Oreal group. This means that there are more competitors to the company because it has joined a very competitive brand. Also the company will gain a lot of customer because of L’Oreal. Garnier also partnered with TerraCycle to promote their product containers and the introduction of biodegradable products. Garniers first product was made by Alfred Garnier in 1904. This was a hair tonic product. After this, Garnier developed their products into sun care items in 1936. Garnier also started to produce Garnier Fructis hair cares and Garnier Fructis style products. This shows that Garnier has changed their products into different segments to aim at different markets. The price would be about  £5-6 pounds. I have set the price high because other shampoos that are aimed at this target market are at a high price such as ‘Bed head’. The costs of shampoos made by this company is around  £10.00 Also the product will be sold with difference fragrances which will also attract the young adults because the smell will be on their hair. These will be artificial fragrances of fruits. This is an advantage because they care a lot about their hair and would want it to be in good condition .This product would be a good choice for people who buy Garnier products because it is a new product that has not been produced by this company. I have found out that there are more hair care products for adults rather than teens and young adults. My competition is Pantene. I found this in my research. Halo and Devil Effect Essays Halo and Devil Effect Paper Halo and Devil Effect Paper In our lives we can make many unconscious decisions based on cognitive perceptions. For example, when one thinks of the company Apple, they automatically make an association with the iPod/iPhone. When one thinks of an obese person, unfortunately, they automatically think of someone who is lazy and irresponsible. The previous were two examples of what is known as the halo effect and the devil effect. In this paper I will be discussing how the halo effect can be both positive and negative, depending on whether or not it is affecting a person or product. I will also be discussing how the devil effect is something that is always negative because it is basically an assumption that doesn’t allow room for a real evaluation of a person or product. According to Interplay: The Process of Interpersonal Communication, written by Ronald B. Alder, Lawrence B. Rosenfeld, and Russell F. Proctor II, the halo effect is, â€Å"the tendency to form an overall positive impression of a person [or product] on the basis of one positive characteristic† (396). The halo effect can be very effective and good for products. What I mean by this is that is can help with company sales, like we can see with Apple. According to the article Creating the Brand Halo Effect. † Branding Strategy Insider, written by Derrick Daye and Brad VanAuken, â€Å"Profits were up 384 percent. And the stock was up 177 percent. And Apple’s net profit margin increased from 3. 3 percent to 9. 6 percent, an astonishing jump. Apple put the bulk of its marketing budget behind the iPod creating a halo effect that helped the entire Apple product line. : † We can see that customers have this psychological association or imprint of the â€Å"iPod† with â€Å"Apple† because of a strategic/ marketing move by the company: â€Å"To cut through the clutter in today’s overcommunicated society, place your marketing dollars on your best horse. Then let that product or service serve as a ‘halo effect’ for the rest of the line. † This is exactly what Apple did and it worked out in their favor. Now, when someone hears Apple, they think iPod, and because they think iPod they think things like â€Å"stylish, innovative, etc, and will have no probably investing in more products by Apple. The decision to purchase will be easy and quick. When it comes to a person, the halo effect can of course be beneficial for the person who is pretty, and therefore intelligent, but when it comes to the person who is overweight and therefore lazy, it can pose an issue. This would be the devil effect. The devil effect, or the reverse halo effect, is the tendency to form an overall positive impression of a person/product on the basis of one negative characteristic or trait. According to the article, Physical Attractiveness Bias in Hiring: What is Beautiful is Good, written by Comila Shahani-Denning, â€Å"There is considerable empirical evidence that physical attractiveness impacts employment decision making, with the result that the more attractive individual, the greater the likelihood that that person will be hired. This is generalization is known as the ‘what is beautiful is good’ stereotype† (14). What we can see from this quote is basically that if a beautiful woman comes in to interview for a managers position she will most likely be hired versus, lets say, an obese woman. Based solely on looks, and not on qualifications, the hirer will have already assumed that because this woman is beautiful she must also be intelligent (halo effect). And because the other woman is obese she just has to be lazy and irresponsible. This is an example of the devil effect. The hirer will probably ask themselves something along the lines of â€Å"if this person cannot manage her own weight how will she manage this office? † It is yet unfortunate, that often many decisions in the business world can be made based on that one negative or undesirable trait in a person. The decision not to hire her because she isn’t skinny and pretty is biased and unfair. â€Å"Making hiring decisions based on non-job-related factors is detrimental to the overall organizational performance† (Shahani-Denning, 14). She may actually be more qualified for the position, and have a more impressive resume and job experience, versus the â€Å"beautiful† woman. When I think about how the halo and devil effect relate to today’s culture/popular culture, I think of the police department and how people get profiled on the street. There is a lot of controversy going on that police profile based too much on looks and not enough on behaviors. For example, there are often times when I am walking down the street or about to take the train and I will see the police stopping a young kid who is dressed baggy. I believe they assume based on his baggy attire that he cannot be anything more than a â€Å"thug/dealer† or delinquent kid cutting school. They may be stopping this kid while someone walking right past them, who might actually look like your average Joe, could actually be the â€Å"thug/dealer. † This would be the devil effect. But, because this average Joe is more attractive in the sense that he isn’t wearing his pants low, he will be overlooked or looked up upon by the police versus the rest of society as someone â€Å"good. † This would be the halo effect. Overall, the halo and devil effect are very interesting. I believe these effects impact that world unconsciously every single day. We can look to many products, such as Apple products, and many people, like those involved in hiring processes to fully understand how both can play out in todays society.
